Do you know about the Farm Bill?

The Farm Bill is a package of Federal Legislator enacted every 5 to 7 yrs to set the general direction for America’s farms food policy.  2008 FB consists of Food, Conservation and Energy. The final bill provides critical new funding for several programs and makes improvements to increase program efficiencies and effectiveness. The new FB includes strengthen conservations, farmland protection, support for local foodbanks, farmers markets and healthy kids programs.

On 5/14 2008 the house passed a final version of a new 5yr FB. Passing the FB is just ½ the battle. The legislation lays out what ought to happen but turning the promises into reality still lies ahead, Without leadership and action during this next critical phase of the FB, we risk losing the gains we’ve made. The bulk of the FB will be for food stamps more than 2/3 of a 5yr Farm Bill will be distributed to other nutritional programs such as food banks.( 67% food stamps, 14% crop subsidies, 9% environmental programs to preserve farmlands, 8% crop insurance and 2% other.) The support came after intense lobbying by a coalition that included anti- hunger advocates, farm groups, environmental organizations and bio- fuels industry.
