FamilyWorks, a food bank and family resource center, nourishes and strengthens individuals and families by connecting people with support, resources, and community.

Position Summary

The Family Programs Coordinator supports FamilyWorks by facilitating a variety of weekly parent/child playgroups, organizing and implementing occasional evening childcare, and planning, coordinating, and facilitating community events.  The Family Programs Coordinator also assists with outreach, provides information and support to families, and is familiar with and practices the Principles of Family Support in all interactions on behalf of the organization.

Essential duties, responsibilities, and tasks

  • Plan and facilitate a variety of high quality and developmentally appropriate parent/child playgroups (for parents, caregivers, and children birth to 5 years of age)
  • Update and provide information and referrals as needed
  • Help families access resources
  • Enter data and maintain all paperwork as required by the City of Seattle contract
  • Assist with community outreach
  • Work with Resource Center staff and families to develop programming based on community needs
  • Provide childcare during evening parenting classes and workshops
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate single parent and community events
  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required
  • Supervise volunteers as needed
  • Provide a warm, safe, and caring environment for children and parents that is orderly, clean, and welcoming
  • Work occasional evening and/or weekend hours
  • Actively participate in furthering agency cultural competency goals
  • Other tasks as required



The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.

  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse community of individuals and families
  • Comfortable working in small groups and team environment; capacity for directing and supporting volunteers
  • Experience working with children birth to 5 years of age
  • Strong knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices related to early childhood development
  • Ability to communicate effectively both interpersonally and in written/graphic formats
  • Capable of effectively assessing participant needs and determining appropriate referrals
  • Experience working with adults and the ability to model and support the growth of positive parenting skills
  • Ability to maintain focus in a complex environment
  • Willingness to proactively seek supervisory input, resources and information needed to accomplish job
  • Ability to become CPR certified


Education / Experience

  • Associates degree or two years experience in social service programs, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of early childhood development
    • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications, data base entry
    • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is desirable

  • Works closely with a variety of individuals and families on a daily basis including participants with mental illness and/or disabilities
  • Most work is done sitting at desk or table; moderate lifting / carrying (40 lbs. or less) required
  • Must be capable of the physical exertion required in interactions with young children
  • Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours


  • 28 hours per week
  • $17.50 per hour with medical and dental benefits, general leave and holidays
