After School Tutoring
FamilyWorks Tutoring Program
The FamilyWorks Tutoring Program is provided in collaboration with the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club; they provide the space for our twice a week after-school tutoring program. Our vision is a program that incorporates academic tutoring, goal achievement, and experiential learning whenever possible. We support and facilitate the growth of students in 1st –5th grades by providing a safe and inspirational environment where they can build skills and become confident and secure learners. This program is free and parents are responsible for all transportation (Seattle Public School buses will transport from some local schools). Priority is given to low income families and children with special needs.
Our program runs from October through May and relies on a team of volunteer tutors, who give one-on-one homework help every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 4:00-5:30. This one-on-one attention allows tutors to meet student’s individual needs. The program for the 20010-2011 school year will begin on October 18, 2009 and end on May 25, 2011.
To volunteer as a tutor or to register your child, call Megan at (206) 694-6727.
In preparation for the Tutoring program's Family Dinner on April 21st, Guest Chefs Carol Peterman from TableFare! and Nicole Plante (volunteers with Solid Ground's Operation Frontline program) gave 2 - 45 minute lessons on "Making Healthy Food Choices" and "the Power of Fruits and Veggies." The winning dip recipes, as judged by the kids in the tutoring program:
Spicy Peanut Butter Yogurt Dip for Veggies
1 cup low fat plain yogurt
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 tsp. ground mild chile pepper (ancho)
Cinnamon Brown Sugar Yogurt Dip for Fruit
1 cup low fat plain yogurt
1 Tbsp. brown sugar
3/4 tsp cinnamon
The family dinner brings together the students, their families, the tutors to share a meal together and the successes of the program. Thanks to all the tutors for your commitment to the students!
